POWS are non playable characters in Metal Slug. They are half clothed and if you rescue them they give some weapons and items and sometimes they will help you. In Metal Slug 3 there is a POW who is a president in mission 2. In Metal Slug Advance instead of half clothed some are fully uniformed. In Metal Slug 5 Some POWs are executives. During the final mission of Metal Slug 6 the POWS are Mars People that are being contained within pods. POWS will be counted as a score addition to how the player does in the stage. If the player loses a life, all the POWS you had before you lose a life are gone, and then you have to get more prisoners.
Prisoner of War types
Edit
Gives you one random item from his underwear.
A 2nd lieutenant who takes disguise as a POW, supports the player in combat by charging Hadouken, similar to Street Fighter or Dragonball series. He also melee attacks with a spin kick.
A regular army private with a backpack who can often be found wandering through a level rather absent-mindedly. Gives you one random item when you bump into her. If you shoot her backpack it will drop many food items.
Rumi's sister, who does the same thing.
Essentially the same as a regular POW. Gives one Random item from his briefcase. Only in Metal Slug 5.

President: A prisoner that looks like a ciracature of Bill Clinton
If you wait around for a bit, two of his guards will give you items, and sometimes a rare weapon. He also provides a higher bonus score if you manage to rescue him and stay alive until the end of the level.
A chimp who Supports the player in combat, armed with a MAC-11 machine-pistol.
Essentially the same as a regular POW. Gives you one random item from his backpack. Takes over from normal prisoners in Metal Slug Advance.
When rescued, he counts towards your score, but doesn't give you any items.
When rescued, he counts towards your score, but doesn't give you any items, unless you're playing as Allen O'Neil in Metal Slug Mobile 3.
They are kept in stasis tubes in the Venusian Hive. Will bring one random item with a mini-UFO. Appears only in Metal Slug 6.
A Martian POW who supports you in combat for some time with a mini-UFO. Shares the same role as Hyakutaro Ichimonji. Also only in Metal Slug 6.
An unused POW from Metal Slug 5, originally intended to support the player in combat with... EXPLODING MACHINE GUNS!!!! No, seriously, that's what he was programmed to use. It says this on Metal Slug: Missing In Action, the fan site which also began the trend of calling him "Glen Achilles", only founded in unused arena of mission 3 from Metal Slug 5, along with Flame Shot.
Sailor:
Unused POWs From level 5 of Metal slug 4, set on a Cargo ship overrun and captured by Amadeus troops and Pirates. The idea of them being prisoners was scrapped and instead they are only seen running away and jumping overboard, like civillian NPCs in urban levels.
