The SV-001 Type-R, sometimes referred to as the Gold SV-001, is an upgraded and re-colored version of the original SV-001.

Information

The SV-001 Type-R boasts improved hydraulics for increased jumping ability, a new engine with better mileage and torque and new tracks for higher acceleration and speed. Despite its enhancements, the Type-R's armaments are essentially the same as those on the standard SV-001. These golden-colored tanks are seldom seen in the series, due to having higher production costs than the regular Metal Slug. Certain features of the Type-R were derived from experimental aspects of the SV-002.

The Type-R is seen in these locations:

• Metal Slug X: Mission 3. Found near the end of the mission next to the Slug Flyer .
• Metal Slug 3: Mission 1. Ride on the Borobune Slug until it crashes at the bridge. The Type-R breaks free from a Super Vehicle Crate. In this game, the Type-R is flipped horizontally to have better aim at the Huge Hermit.
• Metal Slug 6: Final Mission. It drops down once the controlled soldier is rescued.

Metal Slug: Super Vehicle-001

The Type-R is first seen at the beginning of Metal Slug 1's Final Mission, being piloted by an unseen NPC. In the credits sequence for a completed two-player game, a functioning tank can frequently be seen rolling along.

In the game's Combat School, the Type-R replaces the normal SV-001s in Pin Point Attack. Unlike other games, the Type-R functions exactly like their gray counterparts except it only has one hit point.

Metal Slug Advance

The Type-R appears as a light-brown SV-001 which fires its Vulcan guns in reverse (except vertically) and moves faster than the original. However, it lacks its high jumping ability normally (roughly jumps as high as the original), and requires the Thruster+ card for it to jump as high as in the arcade games. In order to be used, the Type-R card must first be found from the Dungeon stage and activated from the main menu.

Metal Slug Defense

In this game, it appears as a purchasable unit. While it has faster movement, faster production rate and costs less AP than the other SV-001s, the range of both its normal and special attacks has been shortened slightly. It also appears as a relief supply item called the Super Metal Slug Attack, which is much stronger than the normal Metal Slug Attack and is able to pierce through all units, including heavy and tank units.

Metal Slug Attack

The Type-R returns both as a relief supply item and as a Super Rare unit piloted by Marco. It is able to dodge attacks by having Marco jump out of the Slug and tossing grenades before going back in. Its special is crouching down and tossing a barrage of grenades.

Trivia

• The Type-R's dodging animation in Metal Slug Attack is a possible reference on how players in the main games could earn invulnerability frames by jumping in and out of Slugs. Marco uses an alternate grenade animation that was previously unused in the very first game.
