The Augensterm is a Slug introduced in Metal Slug 5.

Information

This Slug was designed to hang on both the floor and ceiling. According to Metal Slug Defense, the four-legged Slug was created by the Regular Army in a secret location intended for war. During the Final Mission, in the subway section, the player is able to use the Slug and wreck everything in their way with it. Unfortunately, the player only gets to use the Augensterm for a relatively short section, ditching it at the end of the tunnel.

The Augensterm is a great vehicle for the time the player uses it, as the pilot is situated in a higher position than other Slugs, making it harder for the enemies to score a hit. Its two Vulcans work in a similar way as the Slugnoid, firing either at the same target, or at opposite sides. It is also equipped with a harpoon that can pierce through enemy vehicles with ease, but it can only aim at the right side of the screen (which most of them come from said side anyways). Its fairly slow movement makes it susceptible to attacks from bullets and rockets if the player is not careful enough.

Variants

Regular Army

	Augensterm: The original four-legged slug created by the Regular Army in a secret location for war.
	Ralf's Augensterm: A blue Augensterm belonging to Ralf Jones. Equipped with flamethrowers instead of Vulcans.

Ptolemaic Army

	Augensterm Ver. P.M: Augensterms belonging to the Ptolemaic Army maneuvered by a Ptolemaic Commander.
	Caroline's Augensterm: A red Augensterm that Caroline modded to be her personal craft. Originally was used as transport for harvesting parts on the battlefield, but as a result of escalating the requirements for herself, it ended up as a weapon. The harpoon generates electricity when it attacks.
	Towa's Augensterm: A purple Augensterm that Towa developed herself from scratch inspired by Caroline's Augensterm. It attacks with a customized drill on the wire tip that can burrow under the ground and reappear on the ground surface.
	Golden Augensterm Ver. P.M: A golden Augensterm that has all of its harpoons generate electricity when it attacks.
	Scrambled Egg: A new weapon developed both by Caroline and Towa using the Augensterm as a base. Due to Caroline having snuck backstage at the Mirage Circus and causing havoc, they created the weapon for the troupe as compensation for the mess. Its base is shaped as an egg per request.

Trivia

• An Augensterm piloted by the Commanders of the Ptolemaic Army exists within the game's data, but for some reason this ended being unused. The Commander variant had no Vulcans except for the Harpoon. Once being defeated, the Augensterm would be destroyed; it is unknown whether there was another Augensterm available or the Slug could be fixed. This variant would return in Metal Slug Defense and Metal Slug Attack.
• This is one of the few Super Vehicles without the word "Slug" in its name.
• Its name comes from the German word for "pupil".
• In SNK Playmore's official Facebook fan page, METAL SLUG WORLD, the vehicle is sometimes referred to as "Aogensterm".
• This vehicle is referred to by fans as the "Spider Slug" due to its appearance.
